Yes, we as a species have evolved beyond imagination in the last century. We have advanced more in the last couple of decades than we have for thousand of years. But at what cost? In this century past, we have used the majority of the Earth's resources, and in the long run, done more harm than good to our planet. Humankind sets itself apart from all other species on Earth. We see ourselves as the masters of this planet, and we as a whole believe that we have the right to do with it as we please.
The fact of the matter is, we are living on a finite planet, which offers finite resources. We have used up more resources in the past hundred years, than what has been used in thousands. Humanity is an over-indulging race which takes more than it needs, ignoring the consequences. In the past couple of decades people have been responsible for the extinction of dozens, if not more, species. We have used up much of the oil, choosing to ignore better alternatives until it is nearly too late. Mankind has set the stage for it's own destruction, and we have left this decaying planet for future generations to deal with.
We mercilessly slaughter animals to feed our ever-growing population, we force them to live in conditions which are far worse than even the most ruthless concentration camp. We buy and buy, then buy some more. Our technology is constantly advancing, making perfectly good products seem obsolete almost instantaneously after you buy it. People are always looking for the newest gadget so that they can keep up with popular trends. People go to work to earn money to keep up with these trends, spending thousands of dollars a year to have the latest product. Money, by the way, is such a superficial concept. It is a well known fact that in centuries past, people could go to a bank, and exchange money for its price in gold. Today, however, this is not the case. At any point any government in the world could cease the production of its currency. The thousand of dollars you have saved up for years could become as worthless as dirt at a moments notice. The truth is, we are blindly wasting the resources that could have sustained our race, and this planet, for thousands of years to come, yet we choose to waste it on useless commodities that give us this false sense of accomplishment and happiness.
So, all in all, we humans are quite stupid. To put it bluntly, if this planet, and the trillions of inhabitants on it wish it survive much longer, the human race needs to go. We are sucking the life out of the Earth faster than a fat kid at McDonalds eating a Big Mac. Does the constant technological evolution outweigh the devastating impact on the planet? New technology could lead to newer, better ways of living. But we have the technology to do that right now. There are thousands of scientists who offer up hundreds of examples on what we could do to sustain this planet and live our lives better. But, there is one group that doesn't wish this to happen: The Government. Most Governments are only interested in self-gain, and profit. The Government doesn't care about your petty problems, it only cares about itself.
To finish this off, whatever this is. We have set the stage for our own extinction. We over-indulge in finite resources as if they were infinite. We take what we want from the planet, when we want it, not even considering the repercussions that we will face in decades to come. We can not continue to live the way that we live, I know it will be hard for the majority of the planet, but we need to completely revamp the way that we have been doing things over the past couple of centuries. In order to do that, the people need to stand up for what they believe in, because the fact of the matter is, the people shouldn't fear their Government, the Government should fear its people. Things will not change on their own, people need to be the change. So next time you see a new piece of technology, don't act on impulse, If you have an Ipod touch, don't buy the next-gen touch when it comes out a year later, yours is still perfectly fine.
On the next chapter of Stuff and Things...
Stuff that makes sense...
And has some sort of structure...
And isn't a rant...
And makes sense...
This is the kind of depth and thought that I've always known you are capable of. You should let this side of you talk more.
